Tricky Tap Dance Trick Steps

Let’s talk about Trick Steps in tap dance.

Pullbacks. Wings. Toe stands. Over the tops. All the things!

What order should they be taught in?

What age/level should they be introduced?

These questions hit my inbox on a weekly basis.

I have personally found that when it comes to teaching trick steps there are two things that are super important. Two things that you MUST do for your students.

And…

Two things that you should avoid at all costs.

Listen to this episode to hear about:

  • What age/level do I introduce specific trick steps?
  • Are tricks an appropriate engagement tool for young tap dancers who are slowly disconnecting from tap dance?
  • The importance of a proper technical foundation before jumping into tricks.
  • Why do so many tap dancers fall into the trap of being able to do tricks just one way, at one tempo?
  • My recommended order for introducing tricks, from pullbacks all the way to pull shuffle lands.
  • Speed training for fast footwork.
  • Two things I NEVER do when teaching trick steps to my students (including teaching them at the barre or in a chair).
