Private Lessons: How To GET The Most

Published on August 29th 2018 by Hillary-Marie

This episode is for students who are considering or currently taking private lessons because, as a student, I want to help you get the most out of your sessions.

With the right teacher and the right mindset, you have the ability to learn many hours of practice material in a one-hour private lesson.

Important things to remember to get the most out of your private lesson: (1:02)

  • Arrive on time (and by on time, I mean early!)
  • Turn your phone off
  • Be ready to focus
  • Be ready to absorb as much information as possible
  • Know what you want to work on in advance. For example: “I want cleaner shuffles... I need help maintaining tempo... I’d like to perfect my double pull-backs... Can you teach me the BS Chorus?”
  • Allow your teacher to give you a new outlook on whatever you’re working on and be open to new techniques. Doing things the same way over and over again won’t necessarily move you forward. If you want different results in your dancing, you’re going to have to try different approaches.
  • Ask questions! This is your time.

Benefits of taking private lessons: (3:25)

  • Your training is guaranteed to advance
  • You will build a stronger relationship with your teacher
  • You are guaranteed to accelerate your training in the dance

Share your thoughts: (3:52)

I would love for you to share with me your experience with private lessons and how they have helped your training. Or maybe you have some questions before you jump in and schedule your first private lesson? Please comment and share!
